Holding the hall of heroes(tournament based PvP, there's only one instance of the hall in the world, you have to win many consecutive maps to reach the hall, and there you'll fight other teams that have won a similar amount of battles, as well as the reigning champions) can get you some rare item drops, as well as a lot of fame for your character/account, which you can show off once you get to high levels by using the /fame emote(and possibly some other rewards that haven't been revealed yet). Fighting in guild battles gets your guild rating, which determines your place on the ladder, which you can find at ladder.guildwars.com

As others have said, the storyline missions are fairly linear- you have an objective which you have to complete, and you do so by following the path and killing enemies. Some are more linear than others, with some offering multiple paths you can take to complete. All of the missions also have secondary objectives which are sometimes hidden, and are generally more diffiucult than the main objective. The rest of the world besides the storyline missions is explorable, with different paths, and no real objectives other than exploring. There are lots of quests and such in these areas, or from towns that require you to go to these areas, which gives a reason and a reward for exploring.

You'll reach level 20 part of the way through the storyline- there are many missions designed for level 20 characters, as well as a large number of the explorable areas that are all balanced(and quite difficult) for level 20 characters. In addition, there's the Worlds at War areas, of which 2 were revealed this last BWE- full of level 28 or higher enemies that are extremely challenging, but also drop great stuff(both in quality of the items as well as appearance). There's also the entire PvP side of the game which is mostly all intended for level 20 characters, which is one of the most addicting parts of the game.

I just found out about this game, and by reading all of your responses (I've had similar feelings about wow and eq) it sounds like this is an amazing game and I can't wait to get in and play it.

It is nice to know that one can get pretty far PvE as that is my main playstyle. When I get more free time I'll PvP, but I can't for the limited amount of playtime that I have.

One question that I had was, Are there Player housing in GW? I only ask because I love to collect things and having a place to display them is always a plus.

Guild Wars is designed for people with limited gametime. That why there is no grind. And no monthly fee. And a level 20 cap. You can enter PvP immideate with a pre-made build. Or you can PvP in the arenas with
low level characters and random groups. An arena battle take in average 2 minuttes.

PvE is actually more time consuming, as you can not leave your character in the middle of a mission or explorable area (due to the instantiated design), only in towns and outposts. Most quests, missions and exploring takes 15 to 60 minuttes.

No player housing. Very limited inventory. There is a vault shared by all character in your account with 20 slots. Your character specific inventory will have a max of 45 slots, which you reach around level 10 which is also where you get access to the vault. You start with 20, and no vault access.

Wow, looks like I'll have to play around then. If PvP only last a few min I may take up PvP a lot.

I come from SWG and I hated PvP in that.

Bummer about the inventory though, but I guess that is a good thing. Makes you keep only what you need to survive.

Yes, many and varied rewards. The game is 50% PvP, so they work hard on making (and keeping) it interesting.

Yes and no. It is an explorable world, and large compared to single player games, but small in size compared to the traditional MMORPG's. It is much more densily packed with fun (monsters and quests). Unlike MMORPG's with a monthly fee, Guild Wars is designed to minimize waste time.

But being financed solely by expansion pack limits how much content they can put in the original game, compared to games with a monthly fee.

A third of the PvE game is designed for lvl 20, and most of the expansion package content will be for level 20. The idea of a level cap is that most of the players will be at the same level (including your friends), and the content can be designed for that level.

And of course, that other half of the game, PvP, is mostly for level 20.

Arena PvP is that fast, and pretty random. Other kinds of PvP can take hours....
